In its curriculum, public programming and civic engagement programs, the Center for American Studies is committed to introducing students to the diverse cultures, social affiliations, and ideas of the people of the United States—as shaped by ethnicity and race, national origins, gender and sexuality, religion, socio-economic status, political activities, education, and region, among other features of their historical experiences as Americans. Such issues figure in our seminars, as well as the courses majors take elsewhere in the university, and in our partnerships with community-based organizations that assist under-served populations. The Center is likewise committed to the cultivation of a diverse faculty and student body in its activities, and to fostering an inclusive learning community that promotes rigorous intellectual discussion and mutual respect among its members.
