Luke G. Mayville

Luke Mayville writes on the themes of economic inequality and oligarchy in the history of political thought. His book, John Adams and the Fear of American Oligarchy (2016, Princeton University Press), draws on John Adams's treatises, essays, and letters to uncover an unfamiliar theory of the political power of wealth. He holds a Ph.D. from Yale University, and he was the 2014-2015 Political Theory Institute Postdoctoral Fellow at American University, where he taught undergraduate seminars including “American Political Thought” and “Inequality and Democracy.” He is currently teaching “Contemporary Civilization,” a year-long course exploring primary texts in the western tradition of political philosophy.
